John 20:16 Jesus said to her, “Mary”, and she turned (and recognized him) and said, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
In this well-known passage, Mary Magdalene goes to Jesus’ tomb early in the morning and discovers that the stone is rolled away. She went to tell the others that Jesus’s body had been taken away. Later, when weeping outside the tomb, Jesus approaches her. She supposes that he is the gardener and, when Jesus addresses her, she recognizes Him and calls him “teacher.”
The challenge of this scene is not whether Jesus is alive, for He knows that He is: the challenge is in Mary recognizing Him…which she eventually does.
Throughout history and here in the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands today, Jesus’ resurrection would be more easily believed if persons could recognize Him in the world, in the church, in our homes, schools, work places, organizations and clubs, and wherever we gather.
The difficulty many people have with Christianity is that it is not seen in action, and it is not reflected in the values and priorities of so many so-called Christians.
This is a personal challenge to all of us to live in a way that points people to God, that makes God a real and attractive option, and that shows His power at work in our lives.
Let us not simply celebrate a feast, glorious though it is. Let us live a life that shows God better than mere words can tell.
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
