This November, the Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI) gathers in Nassau, The Bahamas, for its 42nd Triennial Provincial Synod, an assembly of bishops, clergy, and lay representatives from across the Caribbean.
The Diocese of The Bahamas and The Turks & Caicos Islands is honoured to host this momentous gathering under the theme: “The Church in a Changing World: Renewed, Revitalized, Re-imagined, and Reset.”

History of the Provincial Synod
Since its inception, the Provincial Synod has been a cornerstone of Anglican unity and mission in the Caribbean.
In 1959, it became fully representative—welcoming clergy and laity into shared decision-making.
In 1994, the Province approved the ordination of women as deacons and priests, and in 2019, opened the episcopate to women—marking a new chapter of inclusion.
The Synod has also been a voice for social justice, calling for the Church’s active role in addressing poverty, violence, climate change, and human rights.
Its 2022 theme, “Confronting COVID-19 and Beyond: Being a Church of Hope,” reflected a church steadfast in faith and responsive to the needs of a changing world.

About the Church in the Province of the West Indies (CPWI)
Founded in 1883, the CPWI united the Anglican dioceses across the Caribbean under one provincial structure, giving West Indian Anglicans a collective voice in the global Anglican Communion.
Originally composed only of bishops, the Provincial Synod was reformed in 1959 to include clergy and lay delegates, transforming it into a fully representative and democratic assembly.
Today, the Province includes eight dioceses:
- Barbados
- Jamaica & The Cayman Islands
- Belize
- Guyana
- The Bahamas & The Turks and Caicos Islands
- The Windward Islands
- Trinidad & Tobago
- North Eastern Caribbean & Aruba
Together, they represent approximately 770,000 Anglicans.
The CPWI operates under a written Constitution and Canons, ensuring that its governance reflects both ancient Anglican order and modern Caribbean context.
